FIFA - No more fantasy numbers

I like the idea of the starting eleven wearing numbers one to eleven 100% of the time, however I don't understand the lack of names, what purpose would it serve, I mean I'm sure sometimes refs needs players names to take a look at for some of the more obscure players. Still, at least it'll make the backs of the shirts a little tidier.

Its like playing the friendlies before the league starts, but its going to be forever.. well im they should look into other things than a name or number, it has nothing wrong or bad about it, but whatever that is no arguing possible, in the end they Are FIFA.

Seems a bit odd - Certainly Nike and Adidas won't be too happy.

From a purely 'watching' football perspective I think it'll make things a little easier, but only very, very slightly.

I can't see the point in this at all.

Fifa is just ugly
today they announce that names on shirt are allowed again,
and only numbers from 1-18 basic have to be.

Have to disagree with you guys. Numbering in some teams have started to be nothing short of rediculous. It would be ok for numbers to be 1-23 and not strictly 1-11 in starting lineups but numbers from 30- are just plain stupid. Where it was going, the numbers in this qualifiers would be 88, 99... Tradition is a wonderful thing.

this is bollocks...
i think it should be the oposite..every team should have to make the players choose a number for the season(in eurpe is comom but here in south america is very rare)...
thats a lot better..otherwise you would never be able to buy your favorite player shirt for example..
i think the numbers give players a bit more indentity.

it's only national teams, the final decision have not been made (only the first intance approved it, a second vote over this will be held in october) and according to some newspapers you don't have to use 1-11 for the starting eleven, just 1-18 for the players, assign them, and you are still allowed to use player names.

Yep, OPM :

Article 16 said:
18 players may be entered on the list of players (11 players and 7 substitutes). The 11 (eleven) first-named players must start the match, the other 7 (seven) are designated as substitutes. The numbers on the players’ shirts must correspond with the numbers indicated on the match sheet (numbers 1-18 only). All goalkeepers and the captain must be identifi ed as such.
It doesn't say that the 11 first-named players have to wear numbers from 1 to 11. It may be implied, but it's not written.

It was the same during finale competition (numbers 1 t 23), so it's not a big deal.
In the regulations, I couldn't find the line that forbid names on back.

2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ - Regulations

But was'nt that law applied for national teams in WC2006 and EURO2008?

Today I saw it being applied. All 11 starting players on the match today between Malta and Portugal were numbered 1 to 11. But the names were there.

I think it's a good idea to keep it at certain numbers, big numbers are just silly leave that to hockey :-pp

Yeah, only a bunch of no-good lazy donkeys could think off totally irrelevant stuff like this when they should really worry about the decline of the game itself.
I mean: how bored must those execs be?

Agreed. Squad numbers can become iconic with certain players. Personally I don't care if a play wears a high number.

The work of Sepp Blatter, per chance?

The best solution would be 1-23 for each game. Just like on Euro or WC. No big numbers and enough room for customization.:DD
