I was wondering if the fond size of this site could be make bigger. It is really user unfriendly. I don't have any joy in reading posts on this site but would love to.

Zoom in on your browser. The quality of the text doesn't deteriorate and you can set it to as big as you like.

If you have Internet Explorer 7 it's in the bottom right hand corner of the open window.
 
What browser are you using, and do you use a scroll mouse? Sounds like a PEBKAC error to me...
Try clicking on View, then (depending on your browser) try either 'Text Size' or 'Zoom'.
The reason I asked about the scroll mouse is that if you hold down Shift & use the scroll wheel that also changes the display of the web page.
