Hiragana and katakana will literally take you a matter of weeks and kanji (chinese characters) will take you the rest of your life! Speaking the language is relatively easy in comparison.

I found the best way to learn them was using a kids book written in hiragana and convert it to katakana and romaji.
You can also get online games to help you.

マ ル コ ム - my name in katakana - ma ru ko mu.
