I have signed six new players. Olembe is gone as he was a loan transfer. A couple of centre backs and a left back, a defensive midfielder. They are fairly average, very few yellow numbers in their stats. My two star players are Arellano as playmaker (average stats but good in all areas) and Dario Silva, who is by far my most talented player.
The defaults that play most games are: Kelsen, Ceciu, Nachdecal, Macco, Espinas and Celnili.
Will I ever get out of Division 2 ?

@Matt10: Was it a mistake of yours to play Burchet as a DMF or was it a strategy of yours?
Also noticed you playing Ruskin as a RB and Giersen as a LB. Purposefully?
PES5 with graphic addons such as adboards and turfs is really a sight to behold. Timeless masterpiece, probably the only game that I actually find exciting to watch someone else play it.

Yes that's him Miguel. I believe he had some sort of accident (not football related) and lost part of his leg near the end of his career.

Quite a different strategy we adopt, though I suspect that is down to far more numerous and refined youth players options in later PES games. PES 3 has a very basic youth player list and the award of ability points is way too generous. I got 400 ability points for playing a kid in four games for about a half each. He will be like flippin' Zidane or Figo next season at that rate.

Hey Miguel - thanks for watching, mate
No, I needed some agility in the midfield - and I believe it was the cup match if I'm not mistaken. Burchet is good on the wings normally, but he's got decent acc/speed. I wanted to put some high pressure with him as well. I'm still trying to find the spot for him because Macco is proving to be quite versatile for me and Espimas a strong LMF.
Ruskins v Giersen was on purpose, yes. I know Ruskin is left footed, but I don't have him overlap around Macco/Ximelez as often. He's got some good agility as well. Seems to pair up going forward nicely. Usually I have Dodo (DMF) playing LB. He's quite solid and can pass the ball forward quite well. I won't dribble with my SBs as much, but rather look for forward passes as much as possible. Giersen is a nice feeling player as well - and I could see playing him a CB role or even DMF - which I may try
Have to love when stats actually matter. You can make any player, regardless of position given, play in roles that are designated.
I hope it's okay I post my streams here. I'll try to do a recap afterwards as well to keep the format on point.

Yep, you are spot on @mattmid , Dario Silva had a horrendous car accident in 2006, he had an entire leg amputated.

Does anyone else remember buying the other Konami football games series: ISS which continued on its own branch from the SNES to the PS2 ? Not a patch on PES, the gameplay and control seemed arcade like by contrast.

We begin at Start where they host draw specialists Odd BK, who have drawn 4 from 6 so far, scoring and conceding 5 goals.
Team News: Salvesen will continue in place of the injured Finnbogason after his strong showing in the last game. No other changes
First Half:
A lively start see Salvesen head over from a wide free kick before Lauritsen of Odd goes very close with a shot from the edge of the box which had Opdal scrambling across his goal. Odd are causing problems down the Start right and another ball in sees Opdal greatful to keep hold of a snapshot on the wet surface as the rain pours down. Odd well on top in the first 20 minutes and nearly take the lead as Opdal saves well only for the rebound to fall to another Odd player. Opdal gets something on the follow up and then Lowe is there to hack it off the line. Start finally get down the other end again on 21 minutes as Trygvarrson first in a shot that is saved. They win the ball from the keeper's kick and work Tryvarsson in again, this time he makes no mistake and fires it home! 1-0, totally against the run of play. Odd, no doubt, feeling very aggrieved to find themselves a goal down. On 28 minutes a cross from Bolurfson is nodded back into the middle by Tryvarsson where Salvesen lets fly with a tremendous side on volley that goes just over. Then Lauritsen off Odd forces Opdal into another save before Berger who is having a hard time at RB finally snaps and brings his man down from behind, earning him a yellow card. The Start players are then furious with the ref as the Odd RB does exactly the same thing to Bolurfson but gets away with it. Lauritsen gets in another header for Odd but it drifts wide as the teams go into the break with Start 1-0 ahead. With Odd having had 6 shots on target it would seem a long way from a winning lead yet.
Second Half:
Odd work an early chance and Opdal makes a great save one on one with the striker. The rebound falls his way but Larsen makes a superb sliding challenge to block what would have been a goalbound shot. From the resulting throw-in Odd again work a chance and only a superb fingertip save from Okbal keeps it out! Broberg heads over for Odd from the corner as Start continue to ride their luck. Samuelson of Odd then gets in a shot that Opdal smuggles away at his near post, the ball hitting the post on the way out. All this within 10 minutes of the restart. The troublesome Broberg is then brought down again, this time Christensen earning a yellow card for the foul. Then on 73 minutes Odd finally broke Start's resistance. Strong play down the right from Rashani, followed with a good cross. Trygvarrson got underneath it and Lauritsen rose behind him to send a firm header into the inside of the side netting leaving no chance for Opdal. Suddenly Trygvarsson is released down the right, he cuts in towards goal and lets fly. Rossbach in the Odd goal makes a fine save but the ball comes back to Trygvarrson, with the keeper still getting up and the goal gaping he pokes a foot at it but it sails over! The Start players are annoyed with the ref again on 83 mintues when Christensen is hacked down and again the ref does not produce a card. With Christiansen off the pitch receiving lengthy treatment Odd get in again and another fine save from Opdal keeps the scores level. Christiansen was unable to continut and there was time for one more half chance for Odd but it was snatched at and sent well over. FT 1-1 Odd has 20 shots to Start's 9 with no less than 11 on target. Odd draw again!
M.O.M Opdal 6.5, Trygvarsson 6.5, Aremu 6.5
What a cracking game that was! Odd deserved to win that at least 3-1! Opdal made at least three superb saves, best of which below...

Rosenborg with a maximum 21 pts, maintain their five point lead over Stromsgodset who themsleves have a three point lead over Molde and Sarpsborg. Valerenga and Bodo are tucked in behind a point further back. Start are 8th on 9pts with Ranheim and 4 pts clear of the relegation spots. Lillestrom still prop up the table with 3 draws and no wins from 7 games. Sandefjord and Kristiansund sit above them on 5pts
Botheim (Rosenborg) has gone ahead in the goalscoring charts on 5 goals. Whilst Holm (Valerenga) and Heintz (Sarpsborg) lead the assists table with 5 apiece.
Really bad news for Start as it's confirmed youngster Christiansen will be out for 17 weeks!!!!

Kongsvinger v Nest-Sotra
Nest Sotra go to 2nd placed Kongsvinger knowing a win would put them in touching distance of them. Defeat, however, could see them slip back into the bottom half. They will face current league top scorer Ibrahim who has 3 goals to date. Sjolstad who shares the lead in assists with 2 will be missing though as he is out with injury. With Edvarsen picking up a knock, Furdal will take his place having recovered from injury himself. Nesse will be hoping to continue his fine form.
First Half:
A scrappy opening twenty minutes is punctuated only by a snapshot from Juvik that is comfortably saved and a woefully dragged shot from Kongsvinger that ends up nearer the corner flag than the goal. Then on 22 minutes Ibrahim gets up to send a firm header narrowly wide of the post with Sevlik stranded. The first chance for the danger man and a warning if they needed one. The half continue is similar fashion with a couple of half chances put well over. If anyone is in the Kongsvinger area there are several souvenir balls in the car park if you're interested! HT 0-0
Second Half:
On 56 minutes Nest-Sotra get a stroke of luck as a cross is played in behind them and Ibrahim goes for the diving header but the ball is just out of his reach. A real let off there. The game continues to be bitty with neither side really troubling the other. Then on 72 minutes Nergaard feeds a nice ball through for Juvik who is tripped on the edge of the area. Nest-Sotra want a penalty but the referee is having none of it and awards a free kick just outside. Martinsen steps up and puts it into the wall. Kongsvinger put another header just over the bar as they look to push for a winner. With five minutes to go Dang gets into the are under pressure. He shoots and it loops up off a defender, over the keeper's head and lands on the bar! So close to a winner there. Rodsand then strikes a firm shot but it's blocked by a defender. FT 0-0

Elsewhere Sogndal beat the hapless Tromsdalen 3-0 whilst Viking won 1-0 away to Jerv. There were wins for Ham-Kam, Strommen and Ullensaker and Levanger continued their upturn in fortunes with a 2-1 win over serial drawers Asane. In the remaining game Sandnes and Aalesund drew 0-0

And goddamn it, Rosenborg shows no mercy. Is their roster really that good?

@WhoAteMeDinner: Yeah I didn't think of that, PES3 has much less teams and players so you have a smaller pool of potential signings. Though the game is generous when it comes to awarding you PES points to spend, you're not keen on getting really expensive players which I agree, it's better to have a squad of players who are not world-class but despite being weaker, you really have a connection with them.
@Matt10: It was time well spent watching it! I appreciate your explanation as I missed your pre-match player selection but honestly I was 90% sure you had done it on purpose. I love that out-of-the-box thinking, not being afraid to try out different things if one thinks it'll have a positive impact on the team's strategy.
Burchet is a one-trick pony, fantastic speed and not much else - less than 60 stamina, if I recall properly. He could be a "situational" kind of guy. Is the opp. team playing a high defensive line? Explore the counter-attack with him spawning balls into the space behind the defense. Are their CBs really slow? Use him as a striker to outpace them. Anyways I don't see him playing a 90 min. match and putting out a solid performance, seems like the kind of guy who'll shine more if he just gets 10/15 min later on the second half when everyone's tired and his speed will really make a tremendous impact.
Giersen has high weak foot acc. right? Comes in handy for his role under your management. In my ML I played Espimas as a LWB and he became extra-useful with his potent long-shots, he gets many more of those specific occasions per match as a LWB than his previous role, RWB.
And definitely agree with you: but newer games don't offer that freedom because of overall player ratings - which I detest. It encourages you to always choose the player the GAME itself believes to be the best option, instead of you thinking for yourself for to come up with a winning strategy. Burchet as a CMF would have like what, a 40 overall rating? Yet, he's a sensible option for the strategy you came up with for that match. This is freedom for one to build his strategy in any way he wants, not the way the developers think you should manage your tactics and players.
Definitely post your streams at will, I appreciated your heads-up this afternoon since I'm rarely on youtube so I wouldn't know you were on. Anyone wanting to post their videos is welcomed, it's bound to spark up discussion about what's broadcasted.

Regarding the ISS discussion, I still have ISS and ISS3 for the PS2 and it's an interesting experience. It's definitely more arcade, PES PS2 is a galaxy away when it comes to the quality of gameplay but I also revisited these two games a while ago and there are a few details worth mentioning:
- ISS3 long passing is probably the best long passing animation/execution I've ever seen in any football game. I was playing a friendly match and suddenly had to stop actually competing and just spent the rest of the match spawning balls between my right and left-back. Then I quit, went to the training mode and spent half an hour doing it.
- playing to the arcade theme of the game, when you're in a particular part of the pitch you're able to get in a kind of 1x1 moment between you and the defender, and if you're able to dribble him out it has a certain "oompf" that's really satisfying.
- Coin toss before the match!

@miguelfcp It's funny you should say that about there being a coin toss because that's one small thing that always bugs me with PES, the home team always kick off. Would be nice if they changed ends occasionally.
Rosenborg are certainly sweeping all before them so far, although I think the last two or three were just single goal wins so maybe someone can stop them, or perhaps an injury or two will slow them down.
I just did a bit of analysis to have a look at the teams. Just a bit rough and ready using a couple of the main stats for each position and here's 'possibly' the best player for each position (only a player's 'registered' position used)

So, Rosenborg and Stromsgodset have the best player in 6 of the 9 registered positions there perhaps highlighting why they are currently 1-2 in the league. Asen at Tromso must be looking for a move
Rosenborg have players in the top three in every position except CM, but there they have 2 in the top 7.
It also highlights Lillestrom's goal scoring problem because aside from Martin who's in the middle of the CF list, their other two options are both in the bottom four.
I'll see if Opdal minds a loan move at the end of the season
He's actually rated 11th on the GK list. He's been superb so far and I'm afraid back ups Duemeland and Boujar are in for a long season of bench warming. Although I will play one of them in the Cup once I get that organised.
Edit: Just had a check of the real league and after 8 games Pedersen is actually top scorer in the Eliteserien with 8 goals.
Rosenborg are certainly sweeping all before them so far, although I think the last two or three were just single goal wins so maybe someone can stop them, or perhaps an injury or two will slow them down.
I just did a bit of analysis to have a look at the teams. Just a bit rough and ready using a couple of the main stats for each position and here's 'possibly' the best player for each position (only a player's 'registered' position used)

I think I only know GK Hansen out of that list. I remember a norwegian keeper named Myhre too, not Myhre the midfielder.
Anyway, talk about a monopoly!...though the same thing happens in most european leagues nowadays.
I decided to put an end to my test-ML. Had a lot of fun with it but it's time to move on to a (much) bigger challenge: a variation of the Originals Challenge - if you're reading this and don't know what I'm talking about, go to the first page of this thread and take a look at our ML Challenge Vault. On this challenge, I'll have to keep the ML Defaults and - here's the twist - I'll only be allowed to get a player when one of my defaults retires, and I'll have to acquire either a newgen or a regen (though I'll give preference to newgens) through the free agency. I'm also not allowed to get rid of any default unless, of course, he chooses to end his career, but whilst he's active I'm forced to renew his contract.

I don't know why they worked 2 football games in different konami divisions but i bet it relates to a disagreement between them on a potential collaboration.
Also i kept ruskin, macco, ordaz and hamsun in my pes5 ml original team (synthpop athletic), i tend to play hamsun as an AMF than a CF and he does good.

I have never liked player development in ML.
I remember in my old OF I had two players who were young and their growth type was standard but for some reason their stats kept decreasing. Why would this happen?

@Titch I really need to play a ML next when I've finished the Norwegian seasons, it's been a long time since I did one. As I say it's been a long time but I don't recall players stats dropping in their twenties. Injuries maybe, did that ever cause that to happen? I do remember signing Quashie and his shot power went up to 99, it was like a bullet when he hit one!

Never thought I'd see the day when finishing fourth in the top league was celebrated as if you'd won the league.
Look forward to the challenge, I might go with that one when I get to do the ML. I might adapt it slightly and do one with these scandinavian teams and use proper players BUT adopt the same rules, can't sign anyone etc etc. Or perhaps work out a conversion for the ML originals stats to match them up with the rest and then go with them.
@Orhainmalz Probably similar to CM splitting away as FM and going in separate directions. Now, FM, like FIFA and PES is another game that desperately needs a rival. I don't like the direction it's gone the last few years, adding padding rather than substance and the team talk's etc are ridiculous with the way it effects players so dramatically. It's become that the teamtalk can decide if you win the game or not. It should be a small edge (or negative) really I think. Plus it takes so long to actually get through a season, it's like having a bloody job not playing a game!

@mattmid: retro-PES is ideal for this type of challenges because there's nothing stopping you from keeping your players for a long time, no risk of having to deal with players wanting to leave for a bigger club, so providing you have enough PES points/money you're able to keep your squad untouched throughout the years if one decides so.
A scandinavian-focused ML save would be really interesting, it would also be a great way to expand my knowledge about their players and teams so I support your move!

Eliteserien
Start face a Sarpsborg side currently sitting in fourth position and four points better off. While also being just four points off second bottom this is a game Start don't want to lose. After three home games in a row where they won, drew and lost they go to Sarpsborg in the unusual position of having only played two away games so far and are also unbeaten having picked up the smash and grab raid in Valerenga and a good draw away to Molde.
Team News:
With Christiansen set to miss over half the season with injury and with the obvious replacement Sandberg still injured from early on in the season it will be down to Segberg to fill the void. The only other change is Wichne coming in for Borufsen who picked up a knock agaist Odd and will miss 2 weeks.
First Half:
Seven minutes in Opdal is back at work saving low down as Tveter shot from a tight angle. The ball went back to him but Larsen was in with a good block. From the corner the ball was worked back out wide and from the cross Tveter got up to head narrowly over. The Sarpsborg striker alreay looking dangerous. Opdal's hopes of a quiet afternoon for once look to be unlikely. Four minutes later and it's Schwartz, Tveter's strike partner, getting on the end of a ball over the defence to poke the ball narrowly wide. Two minutes later and it's Opdal again to the rescue with a fingertip save low down from another Schwartz shot. The ball is worked back into the box and Larsen just gets his toe to the ball first with Schwartz waiting to surely slot it home. Sarpsborg doing all the attacking in this first fifteen minutes with Start just about hanging in there. Another header from Schwartz goes over as Start are unable to get to grips with Sarpsborg at all. Just after that on 20 minutes they finally get a counter attack as they thwart another Sarpsborg attack. Trygvarrson works it into Salvesen who lets fly, but it's straight at the keeper and easily dealt with. Start at least pleased to finally find out what colours the Sarpsborg keeper is wearing! Start manage to keep the ball out of their penalty area for 10 minutes before Sarpsborg send another shot over. They finally get a foothold in the game towards the end of the half without troubling the Sarpsborg keeper thought. HT an unlikely 0-0. 9 Shots to 2 in Sarpsborg favour at half time, but only 2 on target for them is why it remains scoreless.
Second Half:
Start begin the second half well, first Trygvarrsson bombs down the right, sending over a cross that the keeper fumbles at the first attempt but falls on before Salvesen can get in there. Then Aremu wins the ball outside the box but rushes his shot and sends it into the crowd. They look fired up though after the half time hairdryer treatment. On 57 minutes Sarpsborg gets some room on the right and a ball is played through and they are in on Opdal but again he gets the better of them making a smart save as he rushed out. Neat footwork near the Sarpsborg box earns Segberg a free kick as he's clipped He takes it himself but strikes it narrowly over the bar. Start manage to nullify Sarpsborg threat for a while before on 78 minutes their midfielder Singh should have done a lot better with a shot that he sent high and wide. Start win a corner on 81 minutes. It's headed out but Aremu does well to muscle his way onto it before sending in a shot that goes around who is in the keeper's eyeline. It's too late for him to react to it by the time he sees it and it's in! 0-1! Schwartz then sends a fourth header of the game over the bar. Start attack down the left where substitute Bringaker drifts in a high cross the keeper comes for it under pressure from Salvessen. He drops it! There's a scramble for it and Trygvarrson just gets his foot to it to poke it home. 0-2!! The travelling Start fans are going mad. As Sarpsborg pile men forward Segberg wins a loose ball and sets Trygvarsson free down the right. With defenders closing in on him he lets fly on the angle and is low drive ball clips the outside of the post as it goes behind. In stoppage time Schwartz wastes another chance. He could have won this game single handedly if he could find the target. The ref blows for time and it's all over FT 0-2!

What a great performance from the keeper, defence and midfield. Together they somehow kept us in the game and then a great goal from Aremu and a late tap in won it. Sarpsborg had 16 shots to Starts 8 but only 4-3 on target.
Elsewhere Brann hold Valerenga to a draw. Odd surprisingly draw! Stabaek, Start, Bodo and Tromso win, while win of the day goes to Ranheim who win 3-0 away to Haugesund. That leaves just one result and it's Rosenborg. There 100% record is gone! And incredibly it's fallen away to bottom placed Lillestrom where they were held 1-1! However Stromsgodset lost at Tromso so they look to have got away with it.

Really need to start my ML and stop faffing about with the OF
It was great when I used to watch matches or highlights of CL games and recognised players through PES. Nowadays I haven't got a clue who even most PL players are!
So an up to date OF would be great.
I have also been trying to find a way to make an FA Cup format. Might have to play ALL the games. That would be my story in here for sure.

A stern test in store for Nest-Sotra who travel to second placed Strommen who are unbeaten with a 4-3-0 record to date. Despite being 7th Nest are only 2pts off the relegation play off spot of third bottom.
Team News:
With Bjorlo misfiring a bit, Rodsand is pushed forward from midfield to take over whilst Torset comes in to sit deeper in Cirak's role, while Cirak will slot into Rodsand's slightly more adventurous midfield role.
First Half:
A bright opening for both sides as first the Strommen left back shoots well wide when well placed before a well worked opening for Furdal results in the same thing at the other end. A good through ball from Nesse finds Juvik but he takes far too long to get the ball under control and the chance is gone. On 20 minutes a neat ball from Furdal releases Juvik who hits a drive that is pushed around for a corner. On the half hour Rodland had to replaced after the plan to move him back fired as he got hacked down and injured. Things went from bad to worse then as sloppy play in midfield allowed Troen, the Strommen striker, to nip in and take the ball, he burst forward before unleashing a shot which Sevlik allowed to slip in between himself and the near post. 1-0. Then Slidnes of Strommen brought down Nesse in a heavy challenge earning him a yellow card. Nesse was unable to continue as things got worse again for Nest as their key man is lost to injury. Then suddenly on 42 minutes out of nowhere it's all square! Cirak got into some space and burst forward, his first shot was charged down but it bounced kindly and dropped at his feet with just the keeper to beat. He wasted no time in blasting it home from six yards! 1-1. With new found belief Nest broke again, this time with Furdal who brushed off a challenge before bringing a diving save out of the Strommen keeper. Then in stoppage time Strommen got forward and with the ball pinging around in the area it fell to a Strommen player but Sevlik got out to block it well, atoning for his earlier error. HT 1-1
Second Half:
An early shot on the turn from Strommen was all either team could muster in the early parts of the second half. Then on 69 minutes Sevlik made another error as a chipped ball over the top saw him get there first only to spill it. He got away with it though as the striker rushed his shot and volleyed over with the goal at his mercy. The game then got very scrappy with free kicks, tempers flaring and handbags swinging. Something that probably suited Nest much more than Strommen. Eventually the ref brought things to an end and Nest took home a point. FT 1-1 A game of 17 free kicks and 3 yellow cards tells the story.
A really scrappy game and two costly injuries that will hopefully only be short term. A good away point though against a better side.
Elsewhere Sogndal managed a draw away to leaders Viking while Kongsvinger took advantage of Strommen's dropped points by beating Sandnes. THere were wins for Levanger and Ham-Kam against the bottom pair while Ullensaker v Aalesund and Mjondalen v Notodden were both 1-1 draws.

It would seem at this stage that the lack of a prolific goalscorer for any team is keeping the league very tight with most teams capable of beating each other bar the bottom two so far.

Then on 69 minutes Sevlik made another error as a chipped ball over the top saw him get there first only to spill it. He got away with it though as the striker rushed his shot and volleyed over with the goal at his mercy. The game then got very scrappy with free kicks, tempers flaring and handbags swinging. Something that probably suited Nest much more than Strommen. Eventually the ref brought things to an end and Nest took home a point. FT 1-1 A game of 17 free kicks and 3 yellow cards tells the story.
A really scrappy game and two costly injuries that will hopefully only be short term. A good away point though against a better side.
Elsewhere Sogndal managed a draw away to leaders Viking while Kongsvinger took advantage of Strommen's dropped points by beating Sandnes. THere were wins for Levanger and Ham-Kam against the bottom pair while Ullensaker v Aalesund and Mjondalen v Notodden were both 1-1 draws.

It would seem at this stage that the lack of a prolific goalscorer for any team is keeping the league very tight with most teams capable of beating each other bar the bottom two so far.

@Titch: despite all the matches you would have to play, I'd definitely love to hear such a story if you decide to do it.
@mattmid: I'm going crazy with Opdal, now that I can't buy players you show me his highlight reel? Come on man, that's not fair. That first save is a monstrosity! *casually opens his checkbook*...

@Matt10: Yeah, but on the other hand it's kind of painful getting to the negotiation period and not be able to take advantage of it to make a few moves!
Sensini is not regen yet, right? Either way, great upgrade to your defense. Don't you find Libermann's height useful? His aerial game comes in handy but I'll have to admit I usually have him in a back-3, I can see his lack of speed/agility having a negative impact on your back-4.
As for Burchet, I tried him out as a striker like I had theorized in my response to your other post and he's pretty much useless but at least he's a pain in the *** for the CB who's marking him, always trying to find space behind the defense. I was having a horrible game, couldn't do anything with the ball and decided to let Burchet do his thing for 15 min. and he single-handedly changed the match with the few through balls he received during that time - though never making anything impactful after getting it -, which at least alleviated the pressure the opponent was applying on my team for the whole of those 15 min.
Will watch the rest of your stream that I missed.

Platform: PES2008 PS2 - Why? Well, the generation of defaults from PES2008 is by far my favourite: still has the classics such as Minanda, Castolo...mixed with a few recent introductions like Stein, Jaric and Ordaz and the newcomers that began their journey in PES exactly in PES 2008 like Ettori and Gutierrez. Also I've found that stamina has more impact on PES2008 than in PES2009: not only do the players get more tired throughout the match, but the accumulation of fatigue is more noticeable - reminds me of PES5 in that regard, though the stamina/fatigue system from PES5 is even more merciless.
